Dangerous Illusions How Religion Deprives Us of Happiness Vitaly Malkin 9781911350286 Books Reviews

  • Arguments have been made on both sides, but Vitaly Malkin is very persuasive and ultimately convincing. I found Dangerous Illusions to be an intelligent presentation of the argument against monotheistic religions. He makes a solid case for the negative impact that religion has on our happiness, joy & contentment. He makes passionate comparisons between sex/pleasure and abstinence, reason vs. faith, and the existence of so much evil in a world governed by god and his rules/laws. And I found he’s not just preaching to the choir of atheists; he’ll undoubtedly open the eyes of those agnostics who aren’t sure of the existence of a god. He might even convince a few open-minded evangelicals who’ve blindly followed the religious thoughts of their forefathers without questioning the veracity of such beliefs. It’s a book I can’t recommend highly enough.
  • Believer or non-believer, it doesn’t matter. Malkin makes a splendid case for the failings of religion. Monotheistic religions do not better our lot. Instead these religions trap us in a nasty game of do what we say or go to hell for all eternity. No one should ever live under that sort of threat. His book, Dangerous Illusions, is a very long and well-researched work which should be read more than once. The depth of his arguments and his well thought out insights make a strong case that religion lessens and even takes away our joy in life. Recommended.
  • This enormous work by Vitaly Malkin clearly points out the failings of all monotheistic religions, causing and not allowing for, happiness in today's world...the here and now. To wait to be happy in an afterlife that in all likelihood doesn't even exist, and has never been proven to exist, is a waste of living. Avoiding pleasure in favor of abstinence is just wrong-headed thinking. Malkin's book is smart, super-well researched, and beautifully presented with many dozens of full color art pieces. At over 400 pages, Dangerous Illusions is a very serious piece of scholarship, thought-provoking, interesting, and inspiring. Recommended.
